To install On Guard on your Macintosh, you will need a Macintosh Plus or later, 1 megabyte or more of RAM, and at least System 6.0.7. On Guard is compatible with all versions of System 7.
◊ Note To determine the version of the system that you are running, use the “About this Macintosh” command in the Finder’s Apple menu.
This manual assumes that you have a basic understanding of Macintosh skills, including clicking, dragging, launching applications, opening documents, and saving documents. If you need help with any of these concepts, consult the “Macintosh User’s Guide” that came with your Macintosh computer.
Using the installer program
The On Guard package consists of the On Guard security software and the On Screen screensaver. You can choose to install all the software, just On Guard, or just On Screen. The On Guard installer also provides commands for removing On Guard from your system, or updating old versions of On Guard when you receive a newer version of the product.
To install the software:
1. Restart your computer with extensions disabled. Under System 7, hold
down the shift key when restarting. If you are running System 6,
remove allcontrol panels and extensions from the System Folder.
2. Insert the On Guard floppy disk into the computer.
3. Launch the “On Guard Installer” application by double clicking its icon
or by selecting its icon and choosing Open from the File menu.

4. When the Installer launches, it displays the information dialog shown
below in Figure 4. Click the OK button to continue.

5. Check the appropriate boxes to select which software to install. Figure
5 demonstrates installing both On Guard and On Screen.
6. Click the Switch Disk button to select the destination disk. Figure 6
showsinstalling the software onto the disk titled “Hard Disk”. If you
are notpermitted to install software on the selected disk, then the
Install button is dimmed. The Installer does not install software on
disks across a network.
7. Click the Install button to copy the selected software to the hard disk.
Upon installation, you will be asked if you want to continue installing
software to other disks, or to quit.

8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 until you have installed the software on the
desired disks.
9. Quit from the Installer.
10. Choose Restart from the Finder’s Special menu to restart your
Macintosh and activate On Guard.
◊ Note On Guard installs one administrator account and one Startup User account. The installed protection satisfies the security needs of most situations without any additional configuration. To understand how to change the settings to suit the needs of your environment, please consult the chapter titled “Sample Configurations”. To add more users or change the options for existing users, please consult the chapter titled “Configuring On Guard”.
Installing on multiple computers
If you want to use On Guard on multiple computers, you must use the installer application on each computer to initially install the On Guard software. Take the installer disk to each computer and perform Steps 1-10 as described above. Make sure you restart each computer immediately after installing On Guard.
After you have installed On Guard on all the computers on a network, you can configure the On Guard software on one computer, then save that configuration to all computers on the network. The Save To Network menu item of the On Guard Configure application allows saving to any Macintosh computer connected via any network.
